WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

Thk usual monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Ohanpo, at 11 o'clock on Tuesday. There were present : Crs. Lang (chairman), Finch, Smith, Shepherd and Kusabs. Mr A. Armstrong, county engineer, was also in attendance. New Councillor. —Mr J. G. Elmsley, being the only candidate nominated, was duly returned as a councillor vice Mr Jas. Farrell, resigned. Air Elmsley being present, took his seat. Engineer's Report.— In his monthly report, the Engineer stated that the forming and sanding on the To AwamutuOhaupo road, and the repairs to the Alexandra bridge had boen completed; also, that notice boards had been erected on the bridge notifying that it is until for heavy traffic. In compliance with instructions, he had taken levels and prepared a section tor grading and forming near Innesfallen, tenders for which are called. Ha had also prepared a section of a portion of tho Ohaupo-Paterangi road near Mr Ryburn's, which he handed in. With reference to grading the Ohaupo-Paterangi road near its junction with the Te Awanmtu-Ohaupo road, little more can bo douo in this way unless the izrade of the latter road is also alteiud, which, he thought, would be very undesirable, lie suggested instead that tho centre of tho road be made up, and tho worst portions gravelled. As the good weather is anproachiiig, the Engineer reminded the Council of certain works that have been brought forward from time to time, but which have, for several reasons, been held over. The first is tho improvement of the approach to the Mangapiko bridge at Alexandra; two pieces of grading in tho Tuhikaramea Riding—one near Mr McMicki-n's and the other near the finger P'.st on the same road ; and forming portion of the Ohaupo-Hamilton road near Rothwell's liiil, portion of the Kihikihi-Orakau road, and on the road between Ngaruavvahia and Stone's corner. — Pile Engineer's estimate for the whole of these works was about £170, and it was decided that tenders be called for the works for next meeting. Stone's Road.—Cr. Shepherd reported that he had arranged with the Ngaruawahia Town Board to allow of the trees on the road being cut down. He considered tliat any expense in connection with these trees would have to be borne by the Council, as they are on tho county road.—lt was decided to call for tenders for removing the trees, and clearing out a set ot pipes lower down the street.—With reference to the road from Stone's corner, he had asked the Town Board to call a meeting of the settlers interested in this road to see if their demands could bp modified so as to make it practicable for the Council to go on with the work. Most of the settlers were in favour of having the road repaired by ploughing the sides and throwing it into the middle, and sanding it with six inches of sand.— The Engineer stated that to do the road justice it required re-forming from Stone's corner to Ngaruawahia—about -l.\ miles— and as mush as the Council could afford should be spent.—The Chairman said that six inches of sand was too much to ask for, three inches boing found sufficient in other districts. Some portions might not need sanding.—The Engineer was instructed to form this road to the amount of £50, the gravelling to be deferred to the autumn, FUNDS.—The clerk reported that the riding accounts at present stood : —ln credit: Mangapiko Outlying District-, £18 10s 4d ; Alexandra Outlying District, £33 18s 9d ; contractors' deposit account, £11. In debt: Hamilton Outlying District, £315 12s j general account, £247 6s 7d, leaving the overdraft at £219 ISs Bd. Noahoawahia Furry.—A letter was received from the Audit Inspector, stating that the charges for legal expenditure in connection with the Ngaruawahia punt incurred by the Ngaruawahia Tmvn Board, in re Regina v. Paul Aubrey, were such as would be passed by the Audit office.—lt wag docided to pay £13 9s Bd, tho amount which the Council considers themselves liable for in connection with this ferry. Counties ACT.—The circular from the Patea County Council, which has been disoussed at various Councils, was recived.— This matter had already been dealt with by tho Council in the manner suggested. Kihikihi-Te Awamutu Road.—Cr. Elmsley pointed out several bad places on the Kiliikihi-Te Awatnutu road, which required raising and gravellinf,.—The engineer stated that one of the places was caused by trees which shade the road, and nothing could be douo until they wore removod.— The clerk was instructed to write to Mr Bndgmau pointing out the above, and asking him if lie would remove tho trees. —ft was decided to have the portion of the road at Mr Sorby's gully gravelled. ThndEßS. —Owing to ono of the tenders for the work near Inuisfalleu having been mislaid, the chairman and engineer weio authorised to deal with tlie.se teuders later on. Alexandra Reserve.—Mr W. S. Rutherford offered to give £3 5s per year for the leaso of the Government paddock at Alexandra for two years.—The tender was accepted. Accounts. —Payment of the following accounts was authorised :—M.
