(by TKLEGRI'H.— own correspondent.) Auckland, List Night. A determined attempt at suicide was made at Devonport this morning. The unfortunate creature who atteir.ptei to take her life is a Mrs Mary Anne Hill, wife of George T. Hill, fanner, of Lake Takapuna. Mrs Hill and her husband are well-known in Auckland and North Shore. It appears that Mrs Hill, who is about sixty years of ago, has been ailing for some little time. She had an affection of her eyes which would, so the doctors told her, necessitate an operation, and this preyed on her mind. She was found this morning in her bedroom with her throat cut aud a severe wouud in her arm. inflicted with a table knife. She wur still alive, aud will possibly recover. When asked why she had done it, she replied, with difficulty and in a faint whisper, the wind-pipe being severed, " I did it with that knife," pointing to a table knife, "I did not want to go to the asylum." She subsequently expressed a hope to die, and did not wish to recover.
