A man named John Barry, who was employed oil Mr Fallon's contract at I'utaruru, had his leg broken on Saturday last, It appears Barry was employed in driving the horse attached to tho tip trolly, and, when Hearing the end of tho tip, he hit the horse, which started off with a jerk, throwing Barry off the troliy. As ho fell he unhitched the horse and fell under the trolly, the wheel of which passed uver his leg, breaking it. Arrangements were at unce made to convey the injured man to the Hospital, where he arrived at five o'ul.ick on Sunday morning, when his injuries were at once attended to, and ha is progressing favourably. Since Mr R. M. Simpson assumed the position of general manager for New Zealand of the Pluenix Firo Assurance Company, some short timo .since, ho has made sweeping changes in the management, and has completely romodelled tho conduct of the company's business in this colony. One thousand deaths from the cholera are reported in Arabia and Syria. Th« unfortunate young man, James McLeisli, who it, will bo remembered met with a severe accident at Karakariki a few days ago, died in tho Waikato Hospital on Sunday afternoon from enteric fever. The annual election of three councillors for tho Borough of Hamilton will take place on Thursday September 10th next. The councillors who retire are Messrs Hey, Tippen and Jones. Nominations ot candidates must bo delivered on or before Tuesday next at noon. Although several ot the most influential chiefs made application to the Native Minister to have tho sitting of the Native Land Court now sitting at Kibikihi transferred to ()tr,rohanga, it has not been acceded to. The business set down for decision at this court will therefore be proceeded with. Mr James Cracknell, an old rail way omployce and for many yoara an inspector of permanent way died at Mornnsvillo on Sunday from apoplexy and heart disease. l!ang a member of the Masonic fraternity his remains will be interred in the Masonic burial ground, Hamilton ou arrival of tho train from Morrinsvilio to-morrow (Wednesday). The usual monthly meeting ot" the Hamilton Branch of the Waikato Farmers' Club was held in the Waikato Times Buildings last oveninp, when there was a large attendance present. Considerable discussion ensued upon the taxation proposals of the Government, and a resolution was passed to the effect that in the opinion of the Club the proposals of the Government in connection with the Land Tax are unsound, and will prove disastrous to the effective settlement of til" country.
