WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Waikato County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Kit'i kiriroa, at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, There wero present: Crs. Primroso (chairman), Coates, Johnson, Birugh, and Forrest. Mr T. G. S.uidos (County engineer) was also in attendance.
Compensation Court.—Captain Jackson wrote, stating that a Compensation Court for tho purpose of hearing a claim for £254 by the Messrs Hill against the Council for loss and damage sustained by them for land taken by tho Council for tho purpose of roads, would be held in tho Public Hall, Huntly, at 1.30 p.m. 011 the 22nd September.—Oil tho suggestion of Mr Claude, who is to act on behalf of the Council, Cr. Johnson moved: "That the Council employ counsel to defend the ease." Seconded by Cr. Coates, and carried. —It was left with the chairman to make the necossary arrangements with the counsel. Great South Road.—Mr J. C. Anderson wrote, complaining that he had been paying rates year after year, but for tho last ten or twelve years nothing had boen done to the Great South Road running past his property. All the money coming from his part of the district had been sunk in the swamps at Wairangi. Should any accident occur on this road ho would hold the Council responsible.—Cr. Johnson and the engineer both stated that even very lately sevoral works had been done on this road near Mr Anderson's property. —The letter was received.
Overdraft.—A formal resolution, authorising the chairman and treasurer to arrange for an overdraft with the Bank of New Zealand up to tho legal limit (£51(1 15s 2d) was passed. One Man One Vote.—The Patea County Council wrote, asking the Council to support the following resolution :— "That this Council views with alarm the action of tho Government in regard to the Counties Bill before the House in respect to the proposal of one man one vote, thereby entirely ignoring the holders of anded property, who are the upholders of the colony ; and also opposes the Land Bills before tho Houso, which, if passed, will oventuato in disastor and ruin to the colony and to tho workingmeti of the colony, of whom tho present G iveriiment, fesses to be friends. That this Council therefore requests other Councils to assist in urging their members or others to oppose such ruinous and faddish Bills."—The Clerk was instructed to request Mr Bi yce to oppose the amendment of the Counties Act in tho direction indicated above.
Resignation.—The Clerk reported that Mr K. J. Kallender having left the district ho had resigned his so it in the Council. The usual steps will ba taken to fill the vacancy. Riding Accounts.—The Clerk reported the state of the riding accounts as follows : —In credit : Ranairiii out-district, £58 18s 2d : Kirikiriroa, £70 13s S I ; Tamahore, £-11 4s Id ; Cimbridge, £7 10s BJ. In debit : Model Farm account, £147 3s Id.— Cr. Johnson was requested, in view of the state of his riding funds, to curtail as far as possible all expenditure iu his district. Drainage at Huntly.—The Kagineer reported that he had taken tho levels and prepared plans in connection with the drainage of the road at Huntly. He estimated tho cost would be about £30, of which the Messrs Ralph would contribute £10. Owing to tho state of the county funds, it was decided that no action could be taken at present, unless the work is largely subsidised by the settlers. Engineer's Report.—Tho Engineer reported that he had been called to Huntly on the 13th owinc to ;i report tthat settlers had fencod off a portion of the Groat South Road, south of Huntly. On inspection ho found that the road ran for somo distance through private property. He had mado the road passable at present, but as it encroached again further on something more would require to be done. He had not given the c in tractor instructions to go on with tho ford ove the Waorenga stream.as he understood Mr McCrao would a bridge over tho place. The TaniyvhaWaerenga bush road is very bad, and it is quite impossible at present to cart over it. The furze on the Great South Road at Robinson's has only just been started, and six or L ,en feet has be«n knocked down and left. There is now from 45 to -18 feet of furze still growing on the road. Mnir's furze !b not half done. Mrs Schlinker's furze is being knocked down at her farm, but in the Huntly township she has not yet touched tho furze.—Tllo Engineer was authorised to expend £10 on the Groat South Road, south of Huntly, and the clerk was instructed to tako legal action against Messrs Williams, Muir and Bancroft, to compel them to clear their furze, and to notify Mrs Schlmker to clear the furze fronting her property in the Huntly township.
Paymkkts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—J. Forre-t, 10s; K. J. Johnson, £1 10s; Hospital charges, £275 5:3; Stamp, 3s; Salaries, £12 10s! A. .Tohansen, £8 ; T. (i. Sandn*, £10 Pa ; P. Rico, il 15; W. i'irss, £1 10>. lOnoroaciiixg.- -Or. Johnson reported that Mr Tilsley was fencing his property on thotirrat South lload, which ho states is on his property, hut ho will leave a pasage opon.—The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Tilsley asking him that if a survey be made, and ho is tound to be wrong woald he pay tho cost. Coal.—Cr Coates called tlie attention of the Council to the fact that some of tho drives in tho coalmines at Hnntly wore yuider the roads. The Knginoer was instructed to report on this inattir at next meeting.
