RAGLAN.

Native Skrvices.—The Rev. W. Gittos, the We»leyan superintendent of Maori mission in Waikato, is on a visit to theso parts, and during the last few days he has been holding a series of religious s-wvices with tho natives. So far tho various services have been very successful, due in some measure to the large gathering of natives attending the Land Court hero at present. Mr Oittos will proceed in a few days to Aotea to hold services there. The work upon which the rev. gentleman is engaged is much appreciated by the natives. Hβ is a great favourite, and th>roughly acquainted with thoir various customs. Tobacco CuLTUKK,— Mr T. B. Hill has received from the Atlaa Tobacco Company (Auston, Walsh and C".)"'a quantity of Kentucky, Habana, and Connecticut tobacco seeds, suitable for all soils, together with a pamphlet of instruction for cultivation, otc. Mr Hill is now distributing the anert both amongst Europeans and natives. In previous years in many parts of tho district the plant has been grown successfully by both races. Nativk Land Coukt — Tho Native Land Court was opened on Tuesday morning August 4th, in the Court-house Raglan, under Judge Trimble. There were not many natives present at the oponing of the Court. This being the first court hold hero, some little interest was shown. Various applications were made from natives from Kawhia to havo tho considerations of several blocks adjourned to tint place and Alexandra. The court has been occupied during tho last few day* mostly in considering the successive claims of natives interested in the Te Akau block. Some new claims have been established. The following amongst other chiofs have been present and somo of whom have taken a part in the proceeedings bofore the court, viz., Taniehana, Meta Karokn, Clement Newton, Manahi Renata, Mai hi Kerope, Hone Kingi, Mrs Aubrey, Wirina Hoeta, John Barton and others. Another hundred natives aro expected within tho next few days. The conduct of the various natives assembled has been so farmnst exemplary. Accident.—An accident of a very serious nature occurred last week to Mr George Moon, son of Mr John Moon, of Waitetuna. Mr G. Moon wai ongaged with his brothers and other contractors in falling bush on one of the sections on the Te Akau station. Whilst engaged in his work a tree foil on his foot and ankle, which is very seriously hurt; it is supposed that his ankle is broken. His brother, Mr Charles Moon, at once proceeded on to Raglan, arriving about dark, and telegraphed for Dr. Bay, who resides at To Mata. When .Mr C. Moon left they were conveying his injured brother out of the bush. The contractors on this portion of the work have beon most unfortunate, Messrs Pogler, Pretty, and G. Mow. having met with accidents, and Mr John Douglas having heou absent through sickness. Mr A. L. Pegler, whose accident happened nearly six weeks ago, is progressing very slowly towards recovery, being unable as yet to put his foot to the ground, and it is feared it may be some weeks yot before he can resume work again.
