A NEW INVENTION,

We were shown yesterday a very handy little tool, invented by Mr .r.unori Oignan, who lias bam employed fir the last two years on the Lockerbie Kstate. It is called " tho combination staple closer and wire strainer.' . The idea was first suggested to the inventor when erecting a moveable sheep fence on the above estate. Many of imr readers arc no doubt acquainted with an iron fciicin* standard, patented by Reid and Gray, of Dunedin, for erecting moveable wiro fencing for folding sheep, &c, on turnips. One of the features of this patent consists of a bent staple that fits round the standard to keep the wire firmly in the slot iu the side of the standard. Aiter theso staples have been once used, it has been proved that in unbending for removal, they do not regain their original angle and in consequence frequently fail to keep the wire in position. The to.il under notice may best be described as a claw-pincers with a slit iu the claw of the width to take in the standard and when clasping the staple home relieves or adjusts tho staple as required. The claw is also arranged with a leverage to draw ordinary wire staples from posts effectively without the possibility of bending. The back part of the tot I is also arranged for tightening up Mr Chapman Ewen's patent roller, and as the two parts of the pincers are hold together by a thumbscrew, on loosening this the two handles are sizfld to make straining irons for the ordinary wooden roller. The little tool under notice is certainly a very clever adiptition of the various requirements looked for where shepherds and others have to do with wire fencing; and, as it is made in a lieht and portable form, it is ono that wo feel sure will come into general use, so soon a.? the pntantPe can place them before the publi". The simplicity of working and tho various uses to which it can be applied are certain to recommend it.
