PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL
The abore Council met at Morrinsvillo on Tuesday, at II a.m. Pre^nt: Crs. W. P. Chepi'iell (chairman), A. Heaney, N. I. Hunt, M. Harrison, E. W. Hanmer, J. Biiley, W. H. Merries, J. S. Browne, and H. Horrell. The balance-sheet not being forthcoming, Hie annual meeting was again adjourned till tlie Audit Department return the certified copy. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. The special order mads at the last meeting, increasing the Te Aroha rate, was confirmed. The W.uo!toN'(!oMAi Tramway.—Very voluminous correspondence te this matter was read as to what had taken ulace during the month. Itappeired that £1000 had been paid by Messrs Clark, ami the deeds of release had been signed. A rope had broken, and two trucks had been smashed. For this Messrs Clark had also puid £50 in addition to the above. The Council have taken over the tramway, and stopped it being worked, as now wire ropes are required. These have been ordered from Sydney. Mr T. Gavin has been employed at per week to superintend the line being repaired, and he submitted hit of necessary repairs, which he estimated would cost fc'l'Jli 10-*. , Ho also recommended that the Council should purchase the horses now employed upon the tramway, For these Mr Adams asked £40.— Cr. Heaney movod that tenders be called for the repairing of the trucks. —Secouded by Cr. llerries and carried.—A very lengthy and desultory discussion as to the working of the tramway ensued, after which Cr. Hanmer moved, " That tenders bo called for next meeting for the lease of the tramway; meanwhile whenever the ropes arrive and are set upon tho l'ern Spur and May grades, that Mr Gavin be authorised to work the tramway on behalf of tho Council, charging Us (id per truck load ; Mr Gavin to be retained at £3 per week, he being authorised to engage labour to assist.'' —Seconded by Cr. Harrison and agreed to. —The conditions of lease wero arranged, and tho Chairman was authorised to draw np tho same. Air Pavitt was instiuctod to provide Mr Gavin with all timber, etc., required in effecting the necessary repairs, and the clerk was instructed to order five sets of truck wheels. —The following tenders for sleepers were received: —Gooding and Robertson, per 100, 5.', foot, £0 ; !).\ feet, £12. J. H. Hii)ett,":Vi feet, each ; flj feet, 2s (id each. The former was accepted.
Willows.—Tlio Waotu postmaster wrote asking that tlio willows at Ferguson's gully un tiio Cambridge-Oxford Road be cut down, as they wero interfering with tho telegraph wires.—Permission was granted the telegraph authorities to cut down what was necessary. Tun Sanatorium Road Again.—Mr F, I). Rich wroto on the 3rd jnst. : —" Re road from Isaacs' to your Liclilield Te-Aroha road noar lianga : I applied to your Council ill September last to have this road made, and that the Thames Valley Laid Company would give the land. To this application I received a reply that if my company would pay tho cost of survey and al-o expense of acquiring the native land (which Mr Sandes informed ma would be about £12), your Council would make tho road as soon as funds were available. [ never replied to this communication, but tlio matter lias been brought before the local board of advice of my company, who foel they ought not to be called upon for such a contribution considering the largo amount which the company piys in rates. Mr S indes informs uie ho his actually done £13 worth of work out of £18, which would be the full amount for its completion. I may say our company have arrived to pay the t'l.'J, and will bo prepared to p; t y the additional £."> if your Council will take the necessary action to acquire tha small piece of native laud and proceed with the work when in fund's as stated. This will, I trust, be agreed to."—Mr Sandes said he had surveyed tlio road. —Cr. Browne said the road would ho greatly u-ed, as it shortened tho road very considerably to tho telegraph and post oltice. and ho thought it sliouid be dedicated. —It was resolved to comply with Mr Rich's request and dedicate the ro.id.
Taotaohoa.—The ratepayers of Taot mroa petitioned the Council to lower some of the hills on the main road and coat them with travel. —The engineer was instructed to inspect the road in question and report at next meeting. Te Aroha.—lt was resolved to forward the subsidy of £75 to the Te Aroha Town Board for the maintenance of the main road through tho township. Sir Walter Bdller.—This lato candidate for election sent a copy of the letter that he had forwarded to the returning officer, re his Cambridge deputy. —We have already published this document, which tho Council met by a motion " That the letter be not received." Te Aroha-Ijlohfield Road.—The consent of the council was given to the proposed closing of a portion of this road between Matamata mid Te Aroha, a better one having been provided. Mohrinsvillk Cemetery.—The Chairman, Crs. Harrison ana Korrell were appointed a committee to see that the cemetery was tenced and a gate erected, and do any other necessary matters connected therewith.—The Bank were thanked for giving the ground. Gordon Settlement.—'The Gordon settlers offered a further sum of £20 if tha ixuncil would give a like amount to be spent upon the roads within tho settlement. This makes the total amount voted £70. — It was resolved to give tho amount and call for tenders for the work. Accounts.—The following accounts wero passed for payment :—W. Shine. £50; Taotaoroa Road Board, £21 ; Waitoa Road Board, £124 lid 9d ; Te Aroha Town Board, £75. The Engineer's report and several other matters we shall havo to ileal with in our next issue. The discussion le the tramway occupied fully half the day. The To Aroha riding members fought hard to have a scheme they had prepared tried, but they eventually relinquished it in favour of tho motion given above.
