It appears, from a return laid on the table of tho House yesteiday, that the cost of surveys ordered from the Bth October, 1887, to the 23rd January, 1891, in connection with the North Island Main Trunk railway line, was £7,850 5s 4d. THE PREMIER'S ILLNESS. Mr UUlance was still too ill to take his seat in tho House to-day, and tho second reading of theLuidand Inoame Tax Bill was again postponed. A PECULIAR CASK. The Public Petitions Committee havo reported on the petition of Joseph Jessop, of Pahiatua. Tho petitioner stated that he had been fined £20 under the Beer Duty Act, and that his brewery plant had been sold np to satisfy the fine. Ho alleges that he was thus deprived of a business which was worth £2000 a year, mid prayed for compensation. Tho Committee recommended that the prayer should not be granted. THE LAND BILL. Another meeting of the Waste Lands Committee for tlie consideration of the Land Bill was held this morning. It was decided that the period of compulsory residence on perpetual leaseholds should bo fifteen years instead of tho whole term of tho lease as heretofore. The right of option I as to the system of tenure was left with the selector, tho Minister for Lands having modified the clause by which he proposed to retain to himself the fixing of tho tenure, so that tho powor shall only be increased in regard to particular cases when public policy demands it. Tho conditions proposed in the Bill as to cash sales were affirmed by the committee.
