Oi'bnino of the Academy oi- , Mlsic — Among social items the event of the week has been the ball given by the proprietor of the newly erected Academy nf Music. To celebrate its opening about 250 visitors wero present and the bait was the most successful ever hold in Paoroa. The inside of the building is tinted a cool green and the decorations in the Etruscan style, the act-drop depicts a French country dance and is the work of a London (South Kensington) artist. Tho hnll is 75 x ISO and lljft clear from floor to ceilinp. On the opening night it was lit bv 11 of the new gas lamps, each about 30 candle power, the effect being most brilliant. The R.M. and Polico Court will henceforth be held in the Academy.
