WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

i Tim monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held at the Council Chambers. Ohaupo, on Tuesday. Present: Council- , lors Lang (chairman), Smith, Teasdale. ' Kusabs, Anderson, and Finch. Mr W. A. Armstrong, County Engineer, was also in attendance. Enginkbu's Report.—'The engineer in his monthly report stated the repairs to tho Waikato bridge at Cambridge have been completed. This work was of a more extensive character than was at first anticipated the whole of the piles of the bridge are affected with a species of dry rot, and five of tliem had to bo renewed as r well as the sheathing on the Waipa end. " The sheathing at the Cambridge end of tho bridge is mt in a very sound condition but 1 will last fir some time longer. The. der f.iclive portions of the remaining piles were n dressed oil and I ho whole surface coated £ with hot tar. The pipe culvert 011 the Kihikihi-Te Awaumtu road had been lifted and relayed. Crown Lands.—Tho Commissioner of ?' Crown Lands at Auckland wrote as follows Lot 17(>a, Ngaroto, has beou 0 proclaimed as a recreation ground, and Lots 74 and 87, Mangapiko, as a public park and pleasure ground at Alexandra. ! e The Land Board decidcd to recommend the 1 Government to vest these reserves in your Council, and after this has been done the Council will have power to lease for periods of three years."—Letter received. ,•« Small Bihiis.—Ten ratepayers called the s, attention of tho Council to the great damage done to the crops by tho small iy birds, and asked the Council to supply them with a quantity of poisoned gram so e- as to t'nn them a little.— I Tho chairman said w he thought this lay witl.in the province of the Fanners' Club. Some years ago they

supplied poisoned (train, and when, two years afterwards, the caterpillars appeared complaints wero receiver! against, the destruction of the small birds.— Mr Teasdale spoke strongly against the sparrows, and said he would hi oner have the caterpillars fifty times over. He was in favour of supplying poisoned wheat.—Or. I'inch moved that the clork write to the Farmers' Clubs to ascertain their opinion on the subject.—Seconded by Cr. Teasdale and carried. Pukktk—Mr P. O'Brien again requested that the road bo made to his place at Pukete as soon as funds will allow, as he is unable tn get anything to market and tin had to borrow money to pay his rates—a poor return after paying rates for L' 3 years The clerk was instructed to give the adjoining owners notice to clear the furze on the road. Cue.—The Clerk reported that a lot of the tenants of these reserves had fallen into arrears. —ft was decided that notice be given to the tenants that unless all rents are paid by next meeting, fresh tenders will be called for these reserves. Ri'KUIUA Drains.—Mr W. < Jardner, on behalf of Mes-irs Williamson Bros., agreed to contribute one-third of the cost of cleaning out one drain along this road, provided the cost does not exceed £1. —It was decided that if Mr Gardner agree to pay half the cost, the engineer be instructed to proceed with the work. A Nick Audit Okfick.—A circular letter was received from the Audit Ottiee, askiag the councillors to keep a watch on the collector and treasurer of the Council, as lately defalcations have ocenred, which the Audit OMice has no means of ascertaining.—Cr. Teasdale. moved that the Council being loreed to pay a (lovernment auditor, if that office is not a bio to do the work, the Council would bo glad to he allowed to appoint, their own auditors, who would do the work completely, and at le.s-i cost than at present.—Seconded by Cr. Anderson and carried unanimously. Manuaimko Uoad IlisTiircT.—Tho resolution passed on May IL'th merging the Mangapiko Itoad District into the Waipa County was confirmed, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded Ijy Cr. Finch. Pkacook's Road.—The whole of tho necessary forms having been carried out in connection therewith, the Chairman moved that a road running between sections 78, 70a, 7Sb and 70b, in the parish of To Uapa, be closed,—Seconded by Cr. Anderson and carried. Forming.—The engineer was instructed to inspect the road through Mr Buttles place, and call for tenders for forming the road, to be m by next meeting. Kkpaius.—Or. Teasdalo was authorised to employ a man for a week in repairing tho Frontier Road, between Messrs Bosanko's and Goodfellow's. Vailk's Schkmk.—Cr. Teasdale moved that a letter bo sent to the Premier and the Hon. John Bryce asking them to assist in obtaining a trial of Vaile's scheme. — Seconded by Cr. Smith.—Cr. Finch moved, as an amendment', that no action be taken in the matter.—There being no seconder to tho amendment, the original motion was put and carried, Cr. Finch dissenting. Uatks.—The Chairman gave notice that at next meeting ho would move that a general rate of :/d in the .£ be struck throughout the county, and separate rates of Ad in the t' in the outlying districts _of Hamilton and Mangapiko, ami a rate of :[d in the A! in Alexandra.
