THE CENSUS.
(HY TELEGRAPH,— I'IIESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Tuesday. The results of the census of the colony taken nil the sth April arc as follows:— North Island, 271,253 persons; Middle and Stewart Islands-, 314,157 ; Chatham Islands, 25!); Kermadec Islands, 1!). Total, 1)18,088. The above figures, which do not include the returns wf the Maori census, are given subject to revision. In March, 1880, the census results wore: North Island, 250,482; Middle and Stewart I-lands, 327,801 ; Chatham Islands, 11)!). Total, 578,485, showing an increase of 40,200. Wednesday. In the census returns received by wire from the enumerator at the Thames, one borough, containing a population of 4,1i(>4 persons, wa.s omitted. The population of the colony is therefore larger by that number, and there is a return from one small district in Nelson yet to coim to hand.
