WHATAWHATA.

Thk Late Mu F. H. Kdgkccmhk.—lt was with profound regret that the residents in this district heard of tho comparatively sudden death of Mr Frank Edgecumbe, Government survsyor. For a great number of years the deceased gentlemen has done nearly all the Government work on the Waipa, aud few were more widely esteemed, whether as a genial friend or pains-taking official. One of the last works carried out iu Waikato by the deceased surveyor was reclassing the Whatawhata township lands, which has proved a great success. Although it was generally known that Mr Edgecumbe was seriously ill, few expected snch a speedy termination to a useful life. The funeral notice being so short, many old Waipa friends were unable to pay the last tribute of respect to a man whom it will indeed be difficult to replace.

School Committee Election'.—School Cominitteo matters have not altogether lost their interest. The following householders were nominated on Monday last :— Messrs W. W. Hitrginson, A. Crawford, Robert Bruce, M. Fitzgerald, A. M. Ferguson, T. Kempthorne, \V. McCutcheon, A. Oalder, and P. Iwerson. The number being in excess of that required, a poll will be taken on the 28th inst. In connection with the foregoing, Mr Iweraon, the late chairman of the school committee, had decided not to go in again; but upon a requisition boing handed to him and signed by a majority of the parents of children attending the school, the late chairman consented to be nominated again.
