NORTHERN STEAMSHIP COMPANY.
(BV TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. At the Northern Steamship Company's meeting to-day, tho Chairman stated that, believing it to be their duty and province to push business wherever it was thought there was a legitimate opening, the company have extended thoir operations to the Thames by purchasing the steamers Rotoinahana, Enterprise, and Te Aroha. Then, in order to keep pace with the Upper Thames districts they have decided to build a small light draft boat especially adapted far that trade, to run as far as I'aeroa. They have taken this step after duly considering tho prospects of tho river traffic apart from thu mining business derived from Waihi, Waitekauri and Karangahake. Their service to To Aroha would be conducted as before, until they felt justified in going to increased expenditure. The directors confidently hope these new departures will all prove an increased source of revenue to tho company. As indicated at their last annual meeting, they have further found it necessary to build an additional steamer in order to meet the growing requirements of tho important and thriving district of Opotiki. One director when at Home put his services at our disposal and entered into negotiations with a firm of bi'ilders on the Clyde for the construction of this steamer which, it is expectsd, will arrive in about three or four months.
