HUNTLY.

Business —Things are quieter here than is usual at this time of year. The collapse of Messrs Ralph Bros.' now mine, which gave employment to a number of men. together with the importation of so much Newcastle coal into Auckland, which has a marked depressing effect on the local coal trade, all tend to make tho oirnings of tho miners a matter of speculation. School Committkk Mkktinc;.— The new school committco held their first ordinaty moetinj, on Monday last, and, inter alia, resolved to introduce the compulsory clauses of the Kducation Act and make them operative in this school district. There are a great number of children, even in this place, who are not receiving education of a proper kind, whose parents would do well to bo wise in time and send them to school ere they are compelled to. If parents were nliva to their responsibilities, and, acting upon their rights and privileges, sent their children to the school within the district in which they lived, there would bj small need for a truant school, either in Auckland or elsowhero. Accidkst.—An accident happened to a lad named Harold Peek, son of Mr ,T. N. Peek, last Sunday morning. Ho and Ins brother were having a ride on a very quiet pony belonging to a neighbour, and being without a saddle thoy both slipped olf and hit the dust, bet unfortunately Harold (tho younger) broke his arm in the tumble. Dr. Broom set the limb, and I hear tho patient is progressing favourably. Nkw BUILIHNOH.— The building trade has been brisk in Huntly since the beginning of the vear, somo very nice houses lmv7ng been erected, notably that of Mr Eriar, which is an ornament to the place, anil reflects credit on the builder (Mr Ware) and tho architect (Mr White).
