Larnach, Chairman of the Public Trust Commission, has informed the (rovernineat that they intend to submit an interim report on the working of that department. Tha Premier expects to receive it in a daj T or two. Mr E. Y. O'Connor, Marine Engineer for the Coilnnv retires from the public service in New Zealand, having been appointed Chief Engineer for West Australia. At the Education Board to-day a discussion took place relative to a proposal of the Otasro Trades and Labour Council that uniformity in class and test books used in the State schools should bo brought about by the (iovernment preparing and publishing Kuch books, the whole work of preparation and publication to bo done within thu Colony. The- matter arose out of a circular from the IMuciilion Department, and i resolution was c lrriod that a reply bo sent tu the Minister for Education recommending that tho matter be referred to tho proposed conference of teachers and inspectors. It is expected that the Native Commission will submit its report to thn Government in a fortnight. The consensus of opinion of the Maoris and Europeans illicited by the Commissioners is in favour of returning to the principle of tribal dealing in force before the Native Land Act of WCfi. It i.s said that tliß Maoris are perfectly prepared, as soon :>s reserves are made, to throw opun tho whole of the balance of their lands.
