Tub i iovernmeut have refused to pass the voucher for Judge Edward's salary siuce JUst March, on the ground that uo inouey has been appropriated for that purpose, liATKIi. Judge Edwards this week following the usual practices of I ioveruniout officers forwarded his voucher for salary due on the 30tl) in.st. As there was no appropriation to meet the payment of the salary voti>d for Mr Edwards, his Native Land Commission having expired on 31st March, the claim was referred to the Ministers, After considering the matter iu Cabinet it has been decided that the Government have no power to make the payment inasmuch as the appropriation for the Commissioner has been exhausted and the Ministers have no power to pay Mr Edwards salary as judcre because the House definitely declined t» recognise his judgeship by striking out his judicial title from the estimates, nud further, that a message proposing the excision of the word caine to the House from the Governor.
