The house was insured for £*2UO and the furniture for £100 in the Stand. ard ' WANGANUI, Last Night, Laird's Commercial Hotel was completely destroyed by lire at one o'clock on Sunday morning. The inmates had a narrow escape. Francis Kenny, who was employed at the hotel, was arrested on suspicion, and was charged at the court this morning with having set tire to the hotel, lie was remanded for
eight days. A boy named Hamilton, who was rescued from the building, suffering from blood poisoning, was bad yesterday owing to the shock, but he is better to-day. , NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. Mr Samuel, solicitor for Capt. Meades, has at the latter's request written to the Minister for Marine protesting against the unfairness of the Magistrate's and assessor's decision in the Wanaka case, they having been guilty of an error in judgment in mulcting him in the costs of the enquiry, which Mr Samuel says are extravagant and entirely disproportionate to those which have been previously ordered to be paid by officers who have been found guilty of fault or negligence, but of which Capt. Meades according to the evidence, was expressly acquitted. The letter which goes fully into the evidence is of some length. ~. , , MASTKRTON, Last Night. A boy named C.
