CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The above body met at Cambridge on Tuesday evening, at 7 p.m. Present : The Mayor (Mr Priestly), and Crs. Hally, Webber, Young, Kirkwood, Robertson, Roberts, Bach and Bond. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Subsidy.—The Treasury Department notified the Council that £41 5s had been lodged to its credit in the bank at Cambridge, it being 75 per cent of the amount of subsidy due on borough rates for the year ending March 31st, IS9I. The Waikato Bkidcie.—The Waipa County Council wrote stating that its engineer had again reported on the state of the above bridge, and further that he bad received instructions to at once proceed with all necessary repairs to the structure.—Tho Council were satisfied with the action taken. Typhoid Fever.—On March 27th Dr. Cushney wrote to the Council : " I have to report that at present there is under my care a case of typhoid fever, the patient being a daughter of Mr Glenny, the station master. The rest of the family are being kept from mixing with others, and all disinfectants and the necessary precautions to prevent the disease from spreading are being used. I may mention that the disease did not originate here, but was imported from Auckland."—lt was reported that the patient was improving, so no action was taken in the matter.
Back Rent.—Mr John Wilson having failed to pay the back rents due to the Council, it was resolved to ask him to give security for the amount, unless it was paid within 14 days. Sale-yard Account. —Mr \V. J. Hunter sent his return for the use of the sale yards for the past year, amounting to £4 19s (id.—This is a very small return for the amount the Council have expended upon the yards.—Cr. Webber spoke nf cattle and horses being left in the yards for two days, without food or water, and it was resolved to call the attention of the police to the matter.
Finance.—Overdraft on March 10th, £.ISS 15a Id ; accounts paid during the month and interest on overdraft. £58 Ms Od ; amount lodged during the month, £104 lis !)d ; accounts to pass for payment, £31 10s lid ; overdraft when accounts are paid, £370 17s !)d.
Legal. —The Legal and Finance Committee reported re Coreoran's rent : Your committee is of opinion that the Council has no iegal power to comply with Mr Coreoran's request of the 7th March, for reduction of rent, and further that it would be undesirable as a precedent, and therefore recommend tho Council not to comply with the request.— I'lie report was approved and adopted. Works Report.—The Works Committee reported that since last meeting the surfaceman had been employed 21 days doing necessary repairs to streets, etc. The committee had inspected the domain gravel pit on the, 2nd instant, and recommended that the chairman of the Domain Board (Mr Wells) bo informed that should the gravel required for the borough from tho domain pit not exceed 300 yards per annum on the average of any two years requirements, then the Council should hand over the pit to the Domain Board. The committee had examined several of the streets with a view of ascertaining what amount of gravelling would bo required, and recommended that Hamilton road, from Sharp's corner to Grey-street, Victoria road, from Taylor's corner to William - street, Brewery-street and Queen-street, from Brewery-street to Lake-street, he gravelled with the wharf pit gravel. Princessstreet, from Victoria road to Weld-street, King-street East, from Grosvenor-strect to Weld-street, to be gravelled with gravel from the domain pit. The committee recommended that King-street liaat, from Weld-street to Fogarty's house, about six chains, be formed at a cost of Ss per chain, Fogarty having agreed to allow the water to go into the large hole on his property, provided the Council supply the necessary timber for a culvert opposite his entrance.—The report was adopted. Porlic Hall Committee. —This Committee reported : From enquiries made, it is of opinion that the costs of the lamps in front of the late Duke of Cambridge Hotel would be too great, aud recommend that two small lamps be fitted up, one oil each side of the porch, the cost not to exceed £10. Should the Council approve of the foregoiug report, the carrying out of the work be left in the hands of Crs. Webber and Young. The Committee recommended that the old hall piano be put in repair and be offered for sale. It was decided to erect two small lamps as suggested, also to sell the piano. Cr. Bond offered to let the piano be exhibited iu his shop. The report was adopted. Dor. Registration.—The Registrar of dogs reported as follows : In December last after the fees were fixed by the Council, John Arnaboldi sent his three dogs (greyhounds) out of this district, they have since returned here and Arnaboldi informs me the dogs had been registered iu another district, and that he had done this with the intention of euohreing the Council. I will be glad to have your instructions as to what steps I should take in the matter. M. Feehau, C. Box, C. Potterton, John Sharkey and Mr W. L. C. Williams have each one dog, which they have refused to register. T. H. Brown and W. Fogarty, have each one dog (mongrels) used for cattle purposes and are willing to pay a fee of 5s. —Cr. Bach said lie thought those who had paid were very foolish—i.e., unless the Council were determined to make everyone pay, It was well known that some people some how managed to escape registering their dogs. It was reported to the Council that Mr Fogarty last year paid five shillings for his dog, and got neither receipt nor collar.—Last year's register was turned up, and the name of the individual who stated he had paid the money was not found therein ; it was decided to ask the registrar for an explanation. —Ke Mr Arnaboldi, the Council instructed its solicitor to take steps to recover the penalty for his dogs not being registered. The remainder were given 14 days to pay, failing which proceedings will be taken. Messrs Fogarty and Brown will have to pay the full amount, as their dogs are not cattle dogs within the meaning of the Act
Tiik Mkdical Officer.—Dr. Cushney forwarded his bill, re the typhoid cases —viz., two reports 15s, and visits of inspection £1 Is.—The Council found the lan only allowed them to pay 2s 6d for each visit, the guinea they are entitled to pay under a different clause.—lt was resolved to pay £1 Gs. Tmi Council Chamber Verandah.— Mr McKarlanc offered to remove the verandah snd give the Council 15s for the material. Mr Ilogan offered £I.—Mr Hogan's tender was accepted. Thk Horn or Mektinci. —Next month, and until further notice, the Council will meet at 4 p.m. on the second Tuesday iu each month. Crown Lands. —Cr Bond asked that steps be taken to get the law dealing with Crown lands altered so as to enable the Commissioner to lease town sections.— The matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee to report upon.
