RETRENCHMENT.

Thk following is the list, nf the proposed reductions in the Public Works and Defence Departments referred to a few days ago :—Public Works Department : Consulting engineer, Mr Blackett; four district and resident engineers, 11 assistant engineers and draughtsmen, 20 inspect >rs, and 10 clerks, the permanent and temporary siving liuing £0000 a-year. Defence Department : Commander-in-chief, three commanders (districts ot Wellington, Xow Plymouth, and Auckland), several captains, permanent milit iry storekeeper and others, saving .113000 a year. In addition to this another iiliOOO will he saved in connection with defence works. Hitherto defence works have been done by prisoners, and have been charged to gaols. This will be abolished. The total saving in defence will be .t'15,000. Police Department: Inspectors J. 15. Thomson, S. .Moore, A. Thomson, W. A. Riley, F. Coodall a.call to lie retired, also Fox, chief clerk, the saving being in salaries €'2'J'"i, travelling and incidental exp°nses t'oOO, totat t'27'- r >. Tn the case of Mr Blackett, he is entitled to ii pen-ion of }"."iOO a and as consulting engineer draws £-100 more. It his services are to be retained, this will have to be charged to the Agont-tlcneral's Department. Cut's, Stapp, and Shepherd, the commanders of the Wellington, New Plymouth and Auckland districts: Captains, Taylor and Morrison ot the Permanent Artillery - , Col. Hume, as Inspector of Volunteers; Drill Inspectors McKay and Caste's; and Messrs Sowell, • I.'axtoii and Hackett, storekeepers at Wellington, D'.medin and Lytteltnn respectively. Mr B?.ll. Kngineer for Defence i; also to act as Resident Kngineer at Wellington. Mr Holmes, the present occupant of tho latter position being transferred to Ureymouth. The amount of compensation in tins department will be ftOOO. The Public Works retirements include Mr Blackett, Consulting Kngineer, at London ; District Engineers. Mr Hnrsthonse, Auckland : Mr 44awson, Wanganni ; Mr Martin, (ireymnnth ; and Mr Wilson, Westport ; Messrs Jackson, Croighton, Price, Meek, Swan, and Withers, draughtsmen at Wellington; Mr Leonard, draughtsman at Otago ; Inspectors Jjuruand and Martin, Auckland ; MeUonagate, Wanganni ; Iteyburn, Wollinston ; and Knox, McMillan, Barclay, and Hunter, Otago ; and P-lson. Blenheim. The four Inspectors employed at Mount Eden Gaol, and eightattlie Mount Cook Prison, ami 10 clerks in various parts of the colony are to he retrenched. Mr Holmes, at present occupying the position of District Engineer at Wellington is to be transferred to replace Mr Martin. The compensation is this department will amount to t1,78!)._
A savins of £1500 a year will probably be effected in the Minus and (iuolofrical department and the Geological staff will be brought morn under the snpernsion of the Minister of Mines than previously.
in the Police Department the retirements are Inspectors Thomson, Wellington ; Kelly, Napier ; Moore, Dunedin ; Thomson, Oatnaru ; and Goodall, Westland. The respective compensation will be Mr Thomson. (Wellington) £800 ; Mr Moore, £700 ; Mr Kelly, £000; Mr Goodall, £000 ; Mr Thomson, (Oamaru) £000 ; and Mr Fox, chief clerk at the head office, £700, making the total £4000. It is understood that reductions will be uinde in other departments in this service.
The reduction in the Civil Service will take effect on the 31st March, the end of the financial year, the necessary compensation being paid out of unauthorised expenditure. In the Police Department the number of police districts is to be lessened the present ones being amalgamated into sections and sub-districts being looked after by sergeants. The new districts and the appointments to them are :—Nolson, Westport and Westland, Inspector Atchesnn ; Auckland and' Bay of Islands, Inspector Broham ; Waikato and East Cape, Inspector Emerson ; Wanganui and West Coast, Inspector McGovern; Wellington and Blenheim, Inspector Pardy; Christchurch and South Canterbury, Inspector Pender; Dunedin, Invercargill and the Lakes district, Inspector Hicksnn.
In addition to the reductions already detailed, Mr Kirk, assistant to Sir Jt Hector at the Colonial Museum, and Mr Talethorpo, wood engraver, are to be retired, thus effecting a saving of £300 par annum. Captain Edwin is to be transferred to the Marine Department. These changes mean a reduction of £710 a year in the vote for tho Survey, Meteorological and Geological Department although the real saving to tho country will only be £300.
