THE ARNABOLDI CHARGES.
Tin; report of Sir Maurice O'Rorko and Dr. Mirbach on tho charges mado by Mias Arnaboldi against Ur. Collins, Hindical superintendent of tho Auckland Hospital, has boon forwarded to the Governor. The Commissioners stated that they saw no motive for Miss Arnabaldi bringing forward these charges other than a sense of duty. In the caso of lierry, the report sayß that after the ordinary means adopted for stopping the bleeding trom his crushed hand had failed, reewtirso ought to have been at nnco had to more ulfi'dhe measines of controlling tho hemorrhage. ; that the extent of the surgical shuck under which tho patient was labouring when brought tu the Hospital was ovorestimated, and not so severe as to render it necessary to postpone amputation for some twelve hours, when tho operation w.is undertikun, as .stated in Dr. Collins , report, as a hist resource. In thn case of MeKim/.ip, who ])r Collins in hi? evidence contended was sullerinu from surgical shock to such an extent as to prohibit an operation, the Commissioners hold this contention as untenable, and even if Dγ Collins' view of the ease were the correct one it should have renderod it more imperative on him to proceed more speedily to the amputation of the limb. The wound should have been fully surgically examined and dressed immediately on the admission of tho patient and should h.ivo had careful examination up to the amputation. They further state that the evidence of the doutors present at the operation clearly proves that the operation was skilfully performed and that there are no grounds for believing that one of the rUps exhibited gangrene when being folded over the stump. Dr. Mirback, in an addendum, says that he c insiders Dr. Collins the victim of unskilful and inadequate administration, it being next to impossible for a snreeou to successfully work a hospital averaging 100 beiN single, handed. Although admitting that it wonl-a, under tho present system of management, have been almost impossible to expose tho unfortunate state of alfair.s without the action of Miss Arnaboldi, yet he deplores her act as a bad precedent, and tending to be subversive to discipline. In conclusion ho states that, in his opinion, the system of management of hospitals in the colony might well bo reconsidered in tho direction of removing them from the exclusive and unrestricted control of elected boards.
