(J:iptain Kaircbild reports litivins made the circuit of the Campbell, Auckland, and Snares Islands, and searched every nook and corner in them, but without finding the slightest trace uf wreckage on them. There can therefore now be little doubt that the Kakanui has pone down with all hands, the (.'lie chance remaining that the people might have been rescued by a homewardbound ship.
The party who have b>;-"n down snrvc.yini » lighthouse eito mi the Sn.ires discovered undeniable traces of a wreck there, probably an outward-bound ship. The wreckage. Captain Kairchild report., is in a sort uf Ciivo on tho westward side, of the Siiires, and from the quantity of wreckage in this c.ive it would seem as if Uiu shin dad i-'oin! ashore there, and :ill hands had been lost. Among the wreckage was si topmast topsiilyard and halyards attacheii, a quantity of. caudles and a teak gun ciirriago marked " M. Small, L. S. Cross H." The wreckage may have been on the Snares for some years past, but it i< still in good preservation. No evidence was discovered to indicate what ship the wreckage was part of. The Hinemoa searched every nook of the Auckland, Campbell, and Snares Islands, but not the slightest trace wa.s found of the Kakanui. Captain J'airchild says the only chance is that they have been picked up by a homeward vessel, and there is very slight hope of that. The Mayor has called a meeting for Tuesday, to take step* to relieve the survivors. The Jjellriugern gave the gross proceeds of the entertainment this afternoon for this object.
