The annual fete iu connection with the Whatawhata school carno oli on Tue-day last. The weather was all that could bo d««ired, a cool retreshing breeze tempering the suu'a rays. Sonio forty youngsters accompanied by their parents and friends, rolled up to take part iu the lestivities, on the green fiat by the school. This year the whole of the arrangements were made by our respected teachers, Mr and Mrs Pain, and the fete on Tuesday last was certainly the most successful that has yet been held in the township. The usual games and races, were superintended by Messrs Calder and Higginsun assisted by Miss Iwerson, and which were on this occasion distinguished by having two special prizes, one a silver brea-t pin donated by Mr Howdcn, and the other a silver bracelet donated by Mr 11 arker, both jewellers of Hamilton, to be run for by the boys and girls of the school respectively, after which tho children and parents adjourned to tho schoolroom, where an enormous Bon Bon was suspended, and covered with handsome presents, one for every child attending the school. They were drawu by lot, and at th« conclusion of this (to the children) most important ceremony, Mr Shepherd presented the special prizes to the winners ; and in the course of a few remarks drew attention to the liberal manner in which everyone had subscribed towards the children's enjoyment, particularly their Hamilton friends, and also to the immense amount of patience and trouble taken by Mr and Mrs Pain to make the fete a success, and called for three cheers for them, which were enthusiastically given. After a comfortable tea was partaken of, the majority of th:>se present dispersed, for reasons that are well understood in a dairying district, i.0., to get the evening milking through. AtSp.m daiicinu commenced iu the commodious nchool room ; decorated foi tho occasion with evergreen boughs and flags. The inusie was kindly provided by Mr T. Calder and Mr U. Drabble of Tuhikaramea. During tho evening ample refreshments, which were provided by tho popular caterer Mr H. Mahon, were handed round, Mrs Pain assisted by Mrs Calder looking after this imuortant branch.
