The controversy between the Chairman of the Tamaltere School Committee has advanced another stage. Tho Secretary to the Board of Education telegraphed yesterday Board has considered your telegram, but cannot u'ratit a scholarship to Maud Crawford, as it would he contrary to the scholarships regulations to do so. I am. however, authorised to say that her certificate of prnlicinucy entitles her to free tuitiuu at the Auckland Collego and Grammar School for a period ot three years. — VlNcbs'T E. Rice, Secretary Education Board." To this the Chairman replied ■" Draw your attention to the fact that you have not replied to my enquiries re teaching staff of Epsom and Mangere schools, it seems strange that vnu should have found out at this late period that Maud Crawford is untitled to free tuition, acceptance of which depends upon her guardians, though Committee still maintain their claim for a scholarship for her, aud intend to appeal to Minister of Education. Free tuition to an orphan residing 100 miles from tho school ia a poor compensation to otter.
