CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

Thk annual meeting of the members of the above institution was held on Tuesday at 8 p.in. Present: Messrs J. H. Priestly (in the chair). M. Dillon, E. Kirkwoud, (>. Dickinson, Jus. I tally, J. P. Thomson, R. W. Sargent, D. Cnnaehan, .f. (Benny, W. Sou tor, J. W. iUeriiek, T. Hester, J. Gwynneth and Jno. Haily. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and duly confirmed. The report of the committee and the bdanco sheet were read as follows : —

Kul'OlU'.— I The committee have pleasure in repotting that the library still keeps up its standing in the public estimation, and there is a slight increase in the amount of subscriptions received over the two yens preceding. This the committee view with untii&ctiun, and are led to hope that the amount will increase year by year, notwithstanding the depression which is still fo.t throughout the distiict. The committee take this opportunity of again conveying their bust thanks to the tadic.s and gentlemen who iundiy L'ave tiieir services at the dramatic entertainment and concert on 17th March last, by which tho nut sum of £lu 18s was realised, the committee may also state that the ladies and gentlemen above referred to have kindly undertaken another performance for 17th March next when should the result prove as satisfactory as the hint, your committee hope that tliey may be able before long to place a further number of uew volumes upon the shelves of the library. Tho committee have decided to try the effect of offering tho papers for sale during tho coming year, hoping to bo able to increase the attractiveness of the reading room by the purchasonf new papeis with the proceeds of those sold. The particulars of the proposed sale have appeared on tha walls of the room, and will probably be known to you all. The £20 due to Mr I lu'.ls is still unpaid, but your committee hope as things progress to pay the same oif by degreos. Total £74 2s lOd. The Punas.—'Tho Chairman then read two letters that had appeared in The Waikato Tunis, and commented upon them.— Moved by Mr Gwynneth, seconded by .Mr Kirkwood, and carried, "That tho anonymous letters in tho public Press betaken no notice of by this meeting.''

AsKi'Al'.ilßPOK'i'.--iMi' Gwyuueth moved "That if convenient the report and balance-sheet be published previous to the next annual meeting."—Seconded by Mr Dickinson and curiied Unanimously. Tendkks fok thk Papeks. — Several tenders were received for the pnpprs that the committee had intended to dispose of, but the meeting decided that Thk Waikaio Times, Herald, Australasian and Star nhould be filed for reference ; consequently, the only tenders accepted wore: Rev. 0. H. Garland 15s for the Illustrated London News, and Mr Priestly 10s for the second copy of the Herald. Punch is to bo bound and kept in the reading-room. Thanks.—The Chairman was requested to thank Mrs Thornton for her donation of numerous copies of The Field and Land and Water, and explain how the matter had been omitted until now.

Tub Corporation.—Messrs Dillon.and Hester were elected memboi® of the corporation. The New Committee.—The following were elected to be the Managing Committee for the present year -.—Messrs Tuck, Dickinson, Thomson, Priestly and Merrick. Auditors.— Messrs R, \V. Sargent and ■ las. 11 ally were appoiued auditors. They were also thanked for the lninner in which they had attended to their duties as committeemen during the past year. Finance. —The total liabilities to dat-i wore i'-7, and against this there were subscriptions duo amounting to .yiU lis Od. Tho subscriptions collected last year amounted to t,'ol os ltd —a substantial increase over the previous year, which was £45 18s Sd. The usual vote of thanks to the chairman closed the proceed ings.
