LATE COMMISSIONER SPERREY.
MR THOMPSON'S CHARGES.
(BY TELEiiKAl'lt. —I'KKSS ASSOCIATION".) Wm.iNUTOX, Last Night. TltK Premier has replied to a letter from Mrs Major Mair (the only surviving child of the late Mr Sperrey, Property 'Lax Commissioner), asking that an enquiry should be made into the charges made against lior father by Mr Thompson, of Marsden. Tho Premier states that he had a conversation with Mr Sperrey prior to his deatli about tho charges, and he says: "I told him the Government had always felt tho utmost confidence in him, and placed no faith whatever in the shameful and'ridicuUrtus charges, but that L considered he would get no real satisfaction from a Royal Commission Enquiry, for people who could believe Mijh shameful statements would be bad enough to still believe them whatever a ltoyal Commission might report." The Premier adds that the assurance now given te Mrs Mair, in the name of the Government, of their absolute disbelief of tho accusations, and of the complete confidence they had in his administration, will be sufficient to remove any feelings which the gross attack on Mr Sperrey may have temporarily raised.
