Cim.iuiKS's CiiKisi'MAS Tkek.—'The children's Christinas Tree and entertainment, held here on Tuesday evening iast, was the best evenings amusement we have had hero fur a considerable time past, lho hall was Idled to its utmost capacity by the children and their friend*. The free itself, erected m the centre of the hall, was a largo pine, beautifully decorated with streamers and the one hundred and tifty prizes to be distributed, consisting of toys and games of amuseninnt dear to children, and 'Humiliated by a large number of coloured wax tapers, l-'or the beautiful elt'eet and trouble it must have cost, the children were indebted to M r W. C. Chappcll, assisted by some of the young ladies of the settlement and neighbourhood. Kacli child on entering the room drew his or her ticket for a piize from a box; a capital arrangement, as no cause lor cavil could arise as to the i'air distribution of the prizes. Mr Coruforth, the school-teacher presided, and the singing of the children was rnuarkably guild ; thanks to tho instruction and training they have received from Miss Alien, our well-known amateur Kung.-ucss. Mrs Helps kindly gave her valuable services at tho piano, and played the accompaniments throughout. Several of the songs were of local origin, the author being our respected school-teacher. The last item _or. the programme "(Iriort Night to Vou All," was greatly applauded. The full programme was as follows : Overture, piano, Airs Helps : "I'arewell to •Study,'' children ; "New /.e.ib'.nd Home," children: " Ooek Robin is llead, Misses Anbin, Rutherford, and I'apisch ; song, '• IJirdie Come,'' Miss T». I' inch ; "Oh Dear, What Can the Matter L'."," children ; recitation. Master Allan Morpeth ; " Which Way 1 )oes tho Wind Blow," children; piano lort'e selection, Miss Dura Seccouibe ; sung of thanks, Mii-i Kate Sindni aud children. This concluded the lirst musical part of the evening's amusement. After which (to the youngsters) enmo the event of the evening— the distribution of the prizes—which caused no end of excitement and joy, apparently t,o all, their exclamations aud shouts being a perfect babel of noise. At the conclusion, when all prizes were satisfactorily disposed, the second part of the programme commenced with "The ISrooklet," ty children ; song, " What are Liittlo Uirls Made | Of." Orace Finch ; round, " Happy Ones,'' children; song, " Itoclc-a-bye-Baby, Adeline Aubin; "Some Folks, children; "Gates of tho West," Miss Eva Bayliss; "Oood Night to you All," children. God Save the ijuoen was then sang by the audience, both with heart rind voice, which concluded the entertainment. Mr Cornforth returned thanks for the patronage given to tin :n, and was awarded a hearty round of cheers himself in return. -V vote of thanks to Mr Chappell and the young ladies who assisted iti getting up the tree and in distributing the prizes, and to Mrs Helps for her services, was received with loud cheers and applause. Miss Allen also received loud cheers and applause for iter tuition and training of the children in their musical parts. A dance followed, the children having several preferential dances themselves, which was afterwards kept up for hours by tho numerous party of adults present until early morning. I'AUTY- to Waiiomo.—A large party, consisting of ladies aud gentlemen from here, t'aterangi and Te Awamutu, left yesterday afternoon, en route for the Waiiomo caves, intending to camp out and \ isit the caves to day. Unfortunately rain (~iuie on soon after they left here, and as it 14 raining again to-day it is to bo feared (liev will bo disappointed in their antieiinted pleasure.
