RAGLAN.

Kaolin School Sports and Entertainment.—The annual sports in connection with the Raglan District School, took place on Friday afternoon, December l'Jth. Several of tho children have been busy in their leisure time, during the last few woeks, collecting subscriptions for the event, and they were very successful, collecting nearly £5 for prizes to be given at the sports. On Friday afternoon the children assembled below the school. Fourteen races took placp, and all tho various events were well contested, consisting of long race for boys and girls, three-legged race, egg and spoon race, potato race, fancy race, obstacle race, little boy's race, tug of war, finishing up with consolation race-. The obstacle race was of a very exciting nature, tho lads, having to climb a steep inclined plane, and scramble through sacks and barrels. One lad, of somewhat stout build, stuck fast for a while in one of tho sacks. The boys taking most of the prizes were :—R. Rendell, J. Pegler, H. Sutton. V. Pegler, P. Vercoe, S. Clark, and F. Bulford; the girls being, K. Loane, M. Rendell, A. Dando, and A Charlton. After the sports were over, the children, the committee and friends were kindly entertained in the schoolroom by tho teachers, Mr and Mrs La Trobe, the tea tables being spread with good cheer, to which the youngsters did ample justice, and those of older growth afterwards followed thair good example, all being grateful for the kindness of their host and hostess. The tables being cleared away, the school was prepared for a magic lantern exhibition, which Mr E. B. Hill had kindly undertaken to exhibit. The views consisted of various local scenes, most of them familiar to those present, together with views of parts of Auckland, the graving dock, etc. When the picture of their kind teachers, Mr and Mrs La Trobe, appeared on the scene, bursts of applause broke out. The pictures were very good, and the whole entertainment was much appreciated by all present. Tim chairman of the committee, in a few words, proposed a vote of thanks to both Mr and Mrs La Trobe, coupled with Mr K 15. Hill, for their kindness in entertaining them that day, which was carried with acclamation, thus closing another happy re-union and another year, one in which both the committee and children have great reason to be iiroud of J the good results obtained by their excellent teacher, Mr Li Trolie.

Relnjioits Sekvicss. —On Sunday the Rev. Mr Smith of To AwamuLi, Wesleyan minister, held services in connection with the Wesleyan Jubilee, at Te Mata, Okete, and Raglan. The rev. gentleman had previously been stationed hero during the ministry of the late W. Schnackenberg, some 24 years ago, so that he was not altogether a stranger to the district. On the following day Air Smith visited the homes of many of his old congregation in days long past, returning to Waikato on the Tuesday morning. The Rev. Mr Williams who held evangelistic services here a few weeks ago. has returned to Raglan this week, and will hold services in the various centres on the next f3w Sundays. There is a likelihood of his taking up ministerial work here for the coming year, as ho has been requested to do so by many of the settlers in the district. Shipping.—A cutter from Onehunga has already made two trips here, and she is expected to make a third one within the next week. She has brought a largo quantity of timber and other material for the construction of a new house which Mr A. Wallis is going to have built near Okete. She conveyed to Onehunga a quantity of flax belonging to the Messrs Wallis of Okete. Early last week our usual trader, the Northern Co.'s s.s. Glenelg, Captain Norbury, arrived from Onehunga, and after discharging her Christmas 2argo, proceeded to Kawhia and Wanganui. On Saturday last she arrived from the latter port, getting over tho Raglan bar about 1 a.m. Proceeding direct to tho wharf, she took on board a cargo of nearly 300 bales of flax, and other pioduce. She also carried from hero a good number of Raglan residunts, going up to Auckland to spend their Christmas holidays.

Cumin Ranuatiua.—This boat, now owned by Messrs Rendc.ll and Henry, after having been fresh planked and overhauled by Messrs Philp and Chnrlton, was launched j. few days ago. Sho is to be employed by her owners, among other work, in conveying lime from their new lime kilns, at Waitetuna, to Raglan, for ro-shipping. On Friday last she arrived with 50 bags of lime. Towards night it was found that the lime had evidently got wet, water havinpgot to one of the under bags. Before the bags could be removed, a native, thinking he was doing tho right thing, foolishly threw water on to the smoking bags, thus causing tnoro injury. The sacks wore at once removed, and thirty out of the fifty were found to bo

uninjured, the remainder having become slacked. The sound bags were despatched by the steamer for Onehunga.
