CENTRAL LIBERAL COMMITTEE.

At a meoting of the Auckland Central Liberal Committoe, held on Tuesday, amongst other business, it was decided to petition His Excellency, the Governor, asking thai, the General Assembly bo called together immediately, seeing that the present Government wero practically defeated at the late election. The following is the text of the petition :

To the Right Honourable and Earl of Onslow, Governor of New Zealand, etc. Tho humble petition of the undersigned electors showeth :—l. That your petitioners are electors in various distiicts of this colony. 1!. That your petitioners have heard with dismay that Your Excellency's advisers determined before tho dissolution of the late Parliament, not to call the Parliament then to be and now recently elected, together until tho month of Aprii, 1891. 3. That your petitioners, having elected men to serve them in tho House of Representatives, and being convinced that it is necessary for the public safety, as well as for tho public advantage, that the new Parliament should at once assumo control of the Government of the colony (which is its undoubted right), are alarmed and pained by the unconstitutional step taken by Your Excellency's advisers. . 4. That the elections throughout New Zealand have, as it is generally believed, resulted in the return of a decisive majority against the Ministers, and against their policy. 0. That very momontous and important questions in relation to taxation, retrenchment, and other reforms, press as your petitioners believe for immediate consideration, which consideration can only bo given to them by the immediate assembling of Parliament. !>. That your petitioners bolieve it to be unconstitutional and improper for a defeated Ministry to carry on the work of Government, and to delay for many months the established right of Her Majesty's subjects in New Zealand to be governed bv the Legislature chosen by themselves. Wherefore your petitioners pray that Your Excellency will be pleased without loss of time to summon the General Assembly of New Zealand, so that the right of Her Majesty's subjects here may ho vindicated, and the privileges graciously conferred upon tho colonists of New Zealand by Her Most Gracious Majesty aud the Parliament of Great Britain, may be enjoyed by tham without hindrance or delay. With assurances of all loyalty to Her Majesty and Your Excellency, your petitioners subscribe themselves. (Here follow the signatures.
