NARROW ESCAPE OF MESSRS COATES AND METCALFE'S FLAXMILL, FROM FIRE.
Last night, about 9 o'clock, W. Missen and W. King, who were "eel fishing in the river, opposite Messrs Coates and | Metcalfe's mill, at Hamilton, saw that a fire had started in the null olosc to the engine. They at once ran across the bridge, borrowing a bucket on their way, at the library, they hurried down to the mill, and fortunately, were successful in putting the fire out before it had got any hold on the building. The boys deserve great credit for their presence of mind in at once going to the mill, for in another fow minutes the whole place would have been in flames. The fire is supposed to have originated from a spark from the engine. After seeing everything safe the lads went up and told Mr Coates of the occurrence, and he came the mill to satisfy himself that all was right. Of course, there was no insurance on either the building or fibre, of which latter there was an unusually large .stock on the premises.
