MR CAST LEWN AT OHAUPO.
TO TUK BDITOIi. Sni —The announcement in Thk Waikato Times of Tuesday, that Mr Bryce was, after all, going to be opposed by Mr Ci«tl6ton, was a nurpriso to most people. Several gentlemen were nominated to the chairmanship of tho meeting, but declined, on tho plea that hitherto Mr Castlcton was a thorough stranger in all public matters. Mr Castletnu said he came forward to oppone Mr Brycß, mid to protest atminat a few people who had the presumption to bring him forward. Now, if Mr Custletou was not consulted 1 am very sorry, and it is quite his own fault, for hitherto hiding his talents and public spirit under ii bushel, aud so he hag been overlooked, As ono of the siguers of the requisition to Mr liryce, I lmpe Mr Castleton will accept this as iny apology for overlooking him, and no doubt in due timo he will receive tho same acknowledgement from every other elector who signed tho requisition. As I. did not see one of your special reporters at the Qhuuijo meeting, this mu.t be my apolrgy for tho few following items. Mr Castleton naid he showod hin English pluck by com ing forward to fight this eloction, knowing lie was suiug to '?et a good licking (1 think it does not show much prudence); but as Mr Parr told several electors that Mr Caulleton had no mouoy to tight thin oluctiou hia frienda wei'o bringing him out, Now, I interpret it tliua : Mr Gastluton does the fighting and hia friends get tho licking. Knirlish all over; we often hear of English victoria, but when we come to read tho cft-.twlties, it is the Irish and Scotch and native allies in all parU of the world that «at killed. Mr Castleton also mentioned that; his stake in the country consisted .4 tun children. I think it would Jiitvo hecn more to the point to have eaid tuu stukus. A good many people, we find to our cost, drive their stakes into New Zealand soil and leave them there the first chance ottering. Mr Uastleton mentioned railway grievances, and what Mr Tiiilu'u scheme was going to do, also about the tou of soap aud the ton of sand, ulso about the railway pooplo, far from complimentary. Now an far as tho goods tariff, Mr Vaile has never touched that question in whiuh we (all who use the railway) say he is wrong ; now, I had it from Mr Vaile himself that ho does not intend to meddle with the goods until his passenger fare is finished. With regard to the railway people I have found that if I had a just complaint it was listened to with the greateat respect. Abort bruising the cattle Mr Hudson met cattle truckers years ago at Ohaupo, and when he and Mr Coom understood their wishes the matter was attended to, so Mr Castleton is rather late in the day in that matter. A slight mutter occurred with myself, in an overcharge, and instead of writing to the paper I wroto to t,lio truitic manager ; I received a very courteous reply, and the mistake was put right at once. Mr Castleton received la very patient hearing until he came to tho laud tax, and many finding ■j. vacuum and a long way to ro, reluctantly partially bruko up Lhe meeting. As most of us had hoard Mr Bryce, we should have been better pleased to hear Mr Castletun'a owu viowu mstaad of a secoiyJ-hand ropet' fciou of what Mr Bryce had euid. No doubt ,t candidate may be vury eulerUiiuutf for a rihort tune, to criticise tho thairmun'd business ability or my moral character, all of which may bo equally uuw or out of order, —»I »m, etc, dAM StEEI.E.
