SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT KIHIKIHI.

Erneai JlcKindkb, f» little fellow only nine years of age, aon of Mr K. McKinder, of Kihikihi, met with a severe and remarkable accident at about 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon last. An older brother was mounted on a horse belonging to the place and ordinarily a very quiet animal, when this youngster came up behind and struck the horse suddenly with a switch. The animal lashed out at once, striking the unfortunate lad fair on the foeehead. It was at once seen that the boy was seriously injured, as the forehead was dented in, and the father with little delay took the child to Dr. Rowley of Te Awamutu, when on further examination it was noticed that hoido hard substance (it lookod like a piece of wood) was firmly embedded in the bone of the forehead, above the right eye. Dr. Rowley attempted to withdraw it, but not having the uocesuary appliances was unable to do bo and recommended the father to proceed at once to the hospital at Hamilton, where Uioy arrivod about 11 o'clock p.m. Mr McKiader haviug supported the child the whole distance in his arms to break as much as possible the jolting of the vehicle. Dr. Kenny was soou in attendance, and prepared to remove the foreign substance. The child was throughout perfectly conscioui, and submitted to the trying operation without being put under chloroform. Tho fortitude displayed by tho littlo fellow was something marvellous, and elicited frequent expressions of surprise and admiration from those engaged in the painful and trying operation. After an incision had been made ou each sido of tho wound, rery considerable force hud to be exerted before the substance could be withdrawn, and on closer examination this proved to be a portion of the hoof of tho horse, fully one inch in length, three-quarters of an inch wido, and an eighth of an inch thick. Had the horse been shod, the force of the blow which drove thin so firmly into the skull, must have proved fatal to the child. The operation was concluded before 1 a.m. on Sunday, and from latest accounts last night, the boy is doing well, and with the care and attention provided at the Wailcato Hospital, there is every probability of the child effecting a complete recovery.
