A NARROW ESCAPE.
On Tuesday afternoon Mr H. Hume was out driving a pair of horses in a light buggy, having with him in tho buggy Mr «J. B. Harker. On coming down the hill near Dr. Kenny's house, on the Ohaupo road, one of the polo straps broke, and the pole dropping on the ground, the horses ran away, with the pole running along the ground. Mr Harker got out over the back of the buggy almost immediately, but Mr Hnmo stuck to the horses until just at Mr Parr's store where the point of the pole stuck into the ground and the buggy was up-ended, when he was thrown out, but fortunately not injured. Tho horses then broke clear of the buggy, which was somewhat damaged, and galloped up tho footpath of Victoria-street, with the harness dangling about them. Just betweon the Post - office and I Mr Sandes' place, they ran over an elderly inan named Roberts, knocking him down, and then shortly afterwards ended their mad career, by becoming entangled in the verandah posts »f the Hamilton Hotel. Several people at once went over to Mr Robert's assistance, and carried him into Mr Sandes' surgery. On examination Mr Sandes found that he was not seriously hurt, escaping with a shaking and a few slight flesh wouuds on the hands and face, so that he could not have been touched by the horses, but knocked down by the harness dangling between them, one of the horses going ou either side of him.
