MAYORAL ELECTIONS.
BOROUGH OF HAMILTON,
Yesterday was the election day for the return of a Mayor for the Borough of Hamilton. There were only two candidates in the field, Mr Isaac Coates, the present Mayor, and Mr Edwin Thomas Davey, an ex-councillor. Although the friends of both parties worked hard, the utmost good feeling prevailed throughout the contest. Various guesses as to the result were essayed during the day, but towards the close of the poll an almost general opinion prevailed that Mr Coates would be elected. Mr C. J. W. Barton was the Returning officer, and Mr E. Wilsou acted as scrutineer on behalf of Mr Davey. Although over one hundred and fifty votes weie recorded, the returning officer only kept those who had assembled to hear the result waiting half-an-hour, when he appeared, and read the result of the poll as follows : — Isaac Coates 94 votes Edwin Thomas Davey ... 00 votes Majority for Isaac Coates ... 3S He then declared Mr Coates duly returned, amid cheers, after which the crowd dispersed. (by telegbaph.—press association.) Wellington, Last Night. The election for Mayor to-day caused but little excitement, the result being: A. W. Brown, 027 ; C. F. Worth, 030. For the borough of Onslow the result was: W. H. Littlejohn, 82; A. Cameron, 55. Mr R. C. Kirk was re-elected Mayor of Petone. For the borough of Melrose Mr J. H. Heaton was re-elected. Chbistchubch, Last Nipht. Councillor C. M. Cray was elected Mayor of Christchurch ta.day by GGo votes against 492, polled by Mr Manning, the retiring I Mayor.
