OHINEMURI.

County Elections.— Tho county elections are a.t last over and matters aro assuming somewhat their normal appearance. A very great deal of excitement was manifested and there were a few small rows in which, howovar, not much damage wa3 done. The new County Council comprises the following gentlemen :—Paeroa Hiding, Messrs Oamwells, Kobson, Edwards ; Karangalmke Riding, Messrs Littlejohn aud Nash ; Waitekauri RMiner, Messrs Philips and Hollis ; Waitoa Hiding Mr Bowler ; and Netherton RHing, Mr Cliallon. The election of chairman takes place on Wed•esday next at the statutory meeting, when it is more than likely that Mr William Littlejohn will be elected. Mh If. V. SnwAirr.—Mr G. V. Stewart held a very rowdy meeting last Wednesday. The meeting went very well until a certain malcontent rose and asked a few awkward questions which gave rise to a, bif? row, ! during which the meeting broko up. No vote of any sort was passed.

Public Mketinu. — Messis Cox and Buttle, delegates from Mr W. S. Allen's Tβ Aroha Committee, held a public meeting at Paeroa on Monday evening laet having reference to that gentleman's candidature for this electoral division. Mr W. G. Nicholls occupied the chair, aud the Public Hall was crowded with.eleotors and others. Mr E. Y. Cox was briefly introduced by the Chairman, and explained at great length the causes leading to Mr Allen's abseuce at the present juncture. These causes having already been made public it is not necessary to again state them, but it may be said that the meeting was entirely satisfied thftt it was through no lack of courtesy or carelessness that Mr Allen had not arrived. Mr Butt'o also addressed tho meeting In pood tflert, as did several other speakers, including Messrs Thos. K. Shaw, McKenzie, Tetley, Edwards, and others. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the gentlemen who had come from Tβ Aroha to take part, this being proposed by a gentleman who hitherto has been an opponent of Mr Alien, and there is no doubt but that generally Ilia candidature, although Mr Alien is absent, has many warm supporters here. Mining.—ln mininf, matters, tbo Wailii successes still follow one another. A second battery of 30 head witli all gear, about 200 tons of machinery in all, lins arrived froin San I'Vanciacn, and the (jreiiiniiiatiea for its erection are in duo course. Unless one knew something of the inner working* ot this vast enterprise no conception could bo formed of its magnitude. A Germau expert, lately arrived, estimates that tlio Martha lodu abne would keep all the machinery going for i>o or 00 yoarc The yearly output and turnover is reckoned in six ligarea. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick, and now that .success is coining upon the district, we can scarcely believe

it is true. Mr 11. C. Wick sent a 3i5 ton parcel of ore, value about £4!) per ton, to Adelaide thin week. This oi'a ia Ciuin the Woodstock mine, Karangahake. The Grand Junction mine shareholders have com-

menced working thoir valuable properly at Karanpahake with a fair staff of hands. The Crown lode is still keeping up its prestige, but the returns are uot made public.
