THE RAGLAN MAIL CONTRACT.
Grkat indignation exists in Raglan and the vicinity at the action of tho postal authorities in accepting tho tender of a native for the mail service. It is felt that the emplnvmcnt ?f Maori diivers and conveyances will materially interfere with the success of the tourist traffic which has steadily been settling in for tlio luifc six or seven years and which it is the interest :if the inhabitants to encourage in every possible way. A large and influontially signed petition has been telegraphed to Mr Bias urging him to accept the tender of the present contractor, Air Button ; and as the difference in coat is so small, doubtless the requeet will be acceded to. The telegram is as follows :— " Kaglan and Whatawhata Kuttlers very much dissatisfied with Maori mail contractors. Settlers have agreed to make up difference between Sutton's contract price and Maori contract price, as they believe Maori coach drivers would have tho effect of shuttin? up our seaside district from European visitors, The lute contractor has well satisfied tho travelling public for the last six years, and we feel it is an injustice to our district to change him for a Maori contractor for so small a difference in price."—Signed, William Wallis, J.P. ; Thns. Mitchell, J.P.; J. X. Pegler. J.P. ; and 35 oilier*.
