WAIKATO FARMERS' CLUB.

A'rtlie last meeting of the Hamilton Branch of the WaiUato Fanners' Club a committee was appointed to communicate with the Government, in reference to acquiring an area of lime stono land on the Kuiti section of the trunk railway. The following letter lias been drafted by the committee, addressed to the Hon. E. Mitchelson, native minister, and was forwarded by this day's mail:—

Hamilton, October 13th, ISflO. Tho Hon. K. Mitchelson, JSsq., Auckland : Sir,— 1 have the honour by direction of the Waikato Farmers' Club to brine: under your notice the following facts (Ist.) It lias been for a number of years recognised that one of the chief constituents wanting in soil of tile Waikato and Waipa valleys has been lime, more especially in newly drained swamp laud, of which there is a very considerable area. Various efforts have been made to rectify this by the importation from other parts of burnt lime, but the fact that stone has been so remote and the cost of transit so great, these efforts have proved abortive and tho agricultural and pastoral interests have suffered in consequence. (2nd.) That at To Kuini, it point upon the main trunk line of railway to the north of Te Kuiti station, and also at Waiteti, also upon the railway line, there exist large deposits of the very best lime-stone. This Club would therefore urge upon you the desirableness of at once acquiring an area of at least 500 acres from the native owners, to be set apart and worked in the interest of the community by the Government in the direction indicated. The members of this Club make no apology for addressing you thus upon this subject, as tliey firmly beliove that the action suggested would be of mutual benefit to all concerned ; to the Railway Department by providing extra freight in coal and lime, and to the community generally by rendering productive lands at present lying sour and waste. —Hoping this will receive your early and earnest consideration, 1 have the honour to be, Sir, your ooediont servant, C. J. W. Barton', Hon. Sec. Waikato Farmers' Club.
