TAMAHERE ROAD BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of the Tamahero Road Board was held in the Board's office on Friday last. There were present: Messrs Runciman (chairman), Barugh, Furze, Rhodes and Wheeler. Bad Roads. —Messrs Paton and Sutfcor wrote with reference to the bad state of the roads. The Chairman stated that on receipt of the letters he had attended to the matter and the roads were now in good order. Borne doubt was expressed by the inembors as to the Knreka Avenue Road being a public road, for which the Board was responsible, a3 it was really a road to Mr Suttor's residence. The clerk, however, produced the map, showing the road as a public road, a milo and n-quarter of it being in the Tamahere district and the remainder in Kirikiriroa. Several members commonted on the rather unusual pungent language used by Mr Henry J. Paton relative to the stato of the road at Scotia Valley.—The Chairman stated the road was very bad, and as it was made so mainly by persons who paid no rates ( perhaps Mr Paton might be excused for writing strongly.—The matter then dropped. Tbaction Engine.—Mr Wheeler reported that serious damage had been done to Tinne's bridge by Mr G'oales' traction engine being driven across without taking the precaution to lay stout planks under the wheels, as advised by the Boatd in a letter sent to Mr Coates 011 the 17th March last, and having special refeience to this bridge. A sum of £11 3s 8d had been expended in August last, in strengthening this bridge, and it was stated that Mr Joseph Barugh had cautioned the driver not to attempt to cross the bridge without laying the planks under the wheels, and he promised not to do so. However, he did not use the planks, and the consequence was that the engine crushed through the decking, consisting of sound totara planking three inches in thickness, rendering the bridge unfit for traffic. Messrs iVheeleriuid Rhodes were authorised to have the broken decking replaced by ox 3 kauri planks, and further strengthened by laying lengthway over this decking, a floor of 9x2 kauri planks t.i a width of 10 feet, a thorough coating of tar to be applied between the planking to prevent decay.

Works.—lt was resolved to cut down and remove the sweetbriar crowing and forming an obstruction on the Central and Tramway roads, and also to gravel about 40 chains of the latter road, the cost of the gravel not to exceed S 1 per yard.

SIHU'.UUOMAN'. —Mr Wheeler reported that he had been able to secure the services of a good surfaceman at 5s per day, and for horse and cart 3s extra per day when required. Funds.— Accounts amounting to £18 lis were passed for payment. The report by the Clerk showed the Hoard's finances to be in a satisfactory condition.
