LABOUR TROUBLES.
EMPLOYERS COMBINING
A THREATENED LOCK-OUT.
BUSH FALLERS' UNION 1
(BY TKLECiRAPH — PRKSS ASSOCIATION'). WKM.INfiTON, Last Night. At a meeting of large employers of labour held last night to discuss the hbom difficulty, it was resolved that in the event of ,1 strike extending to Wellington to close their establishments and manufactories, thus creating a lock-out. The Union Company's steamer, Omapere, has been laid up here, owing to the delay in the settlement of the Grey Valley coal irines difficulty, and for the same reason the Coinnany propose, to lay up their atenmer Wareatea, at Lyttelton. The un certainty of the output from Westporl now is also under the consideration of the Company, and the management considers it highly probable that they may have to lay up some of their other vessels at an early date. It is alleged that these mining difficulties have been the cause of another of the Company's coal steamers, the Ohnn, having to seek work elsewhere. The Provisional Committee of tho Civil Service Association is actively engaged in preparing circulars and reports which will be widely distributed in a few days for the purpose of acquainting the service throughout the colony with the proposals of the association. Owing to the short output of coals on the west coast the steamer Omapere is to be laid up and the hands paid oil'. It is stated other vessels will do the same. The arrangement between the Steamship Owners and New Zealand Officers' Association is that the wages have bean increised as follows :—First officer, fcl-t to ,tl(i ; second, £10 to £12 : third, £7 10s to £10 ; fourth, £l> to £8. Tho increase took effect from the Ist of the oresent month. KiELDINt;. I.llst Night. Tho bush fullers are calling meetings in the various centres with fio view to form a Union. (nV DLIiCrRIC TICLICIJUAPII.—CdPYKUMIT.) Sydnky, August S. The Trades and Labour Council has decided to support the Marine Officers' Association, and also to endorse the action of ths wharf labourers in resolving not to handle wool shorn by non-union men, which is expected to arrive from the country to-day.
