Oam uu", Last Night. A must deliberate suicide to»k place, here about nine this morning, when Richard Bennett, aged 53, slwt himself through the lmart with a rifle. Deceased had been for many years chief accountant for George Sumpter nnd Co., and irai an old soldier and exlieutenant in tlie volunteers, having been connected with the latter fi.rco for many years. He was observed this morning bringing a rifle with him to the office, and a junior dork, noticing ho want upstairs to the room used for volunteer purposes, told the storenian, who suspected all was not right and proceeded to the room in question, and just as he entered the door the fatal shot was fired, tha bnllett going tnrimgh the heart. Deceased was sitting in a, chair and had placed tlm muzzle of the rifle against his breast, the butt resting on the ground. A piece of siring was tied to the trigger, the other end bjiug attached to the top of his boot. No reason is at present assigned for the act.
