♦ • SANFOIN WINS THE DERBY. AN AUSTRALIAN WINS THE WOODCOTE STAKES. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) London, June 4. Tun Epsom Summer Meeting was ccntinued to-day. Drenching raia fell, which rendered the course very heavy. The Australian cricketers were present, and it is estimated that fully 5000 Australians witnessed the racing. The following was the result of Tub Dkrisy Stkaks, of 5000sovs. for the winner, COOsovs. for the nominator of the winuer, 300 sovs, for owner of second, and 200sovs. for owner of third. Mr J. White's ch c Kirkham, by Chester —La Princesse Eight horses started. A capital start was effected. Rathbeal was first away, but Orwell and Kirkham quickly appeared in front and led for a quarter of a mile, and Kirkham then assumed sole command for a furlong further, Orwell in the meantime heading Sainfoin, with Golden Gate next. When a mile had been covered, Kirkham dropped back fifth after his brief spurt, and at the top of the hill Sainfoin took up the running, whilst Kirkham was how last. At the distance Surefoot was beaten and Le Nord here made a desperate rush, but Sainfoin, stalling it off, came on and won by three-quarters of a length. Orwell, who was a neck behind Le Nord, beat Surefoot hy a head for third honours. Kirkham finished seventh. Time, 2m. 49A-9. The pace in the Derby for the first threequarters of a mile was wretchedly slow. The Standard says the short scratchy action of Kirkham was not equal to Derby form, and he gave a poor opinion of his capabilities. Mr White's colt acted as whipper-in, and hung on his bridle with I his mouth wide open, causing general laughter.
