The City East Licensing Bench granted all the applications for the renewals except the Occidental, which they intimated it was their intention to close, on the grounds that it was not required in that neighbourhood. Dr. Laishley argued at great length against this course being taken, statins that the lessee of the building, Mr Gleeson, had spent £3,800 upon it, which would virtually be confiscated if the house were closed. The committee agreed to adjourn the case for further consideration. The chairman stated they had no objection whatever to the present licensee, and their only ground of closing was that the hoiwo was not required in the neighbourhood.
