THE NEW PLYMOUTH MURDER.
(BY TKLHGUAPH—I'UESS ASSOCIATION). New Plymouth, Tuesday. The adjourned inquest was resumed to-day. Otto Arnold deposed that the accused had no money, and slept at tho gasworks several nights before tho murder was committed. Ho had on an old pair of slippers, but no drawers or waistcoat. On tlm Friday evening (the day tho murder was committed) the prisoner had a new pair of boots on, showing that he had Rot money somewhere. He saw the prisoner in a fruit shop that day. Major Brown stated that when ho interpreted the charge of larceny of boots and clothes to the prisoner, Mahi Kai stated the waistcoat was Riven him by his parents at Parihaka. Tho drawers he purchased for 2s from a settler named Toogood, near Pehama ; the boots lie purchased at Opu'nake for 15s (>d. Francis Richards, a boy about I*l years old, stated that he knew the prisoner. On Friday, 11th Apiil, between twelve and one o'clock, he saw a person crossing Avenue Road from the racecourse, which he was confident was the prisoner, but he was a good distance off when he saw hhii. The person jumped over the racecourse fence, crossed the road and jumped over a gate on tho other side, and disappeared from sight. The inquiry is still proceeding. Wellington, Monday. Tho Government have acceded to the request made by Mr Samuel, who is defending the Maori charged with murder at New Plymouth, that he should be allowed the services of an interpreter, so that he may converse freely with the prisoner. The Government have decided not to provide counsel for accused at the inquest, but in the event of the prisoner being committed for trial the Government would then engage counsel.
