FIRE AT THE THAMES SCHOOL Of MINES.
* (BY TELEGRAPH—I'RESS ASSOCIATION.) Thames, May 21. At 1.45 this afternoon the Thames School of Mines was observed to be on fir 9 by some persons who were working the experimental plant in the adjoining buildings. The fire bells speedily pealed out the alarm. The fire brigade were on the spot in a short space of time, and by great exertions succeeded in saving the greater part of the collection of minerals, and also the adjoining buildings containing the experimental plant ; the lecture room, however, was almost completely destroyed. The building was insured in the New Zealand office for £200. Universal regret is expressed at the loss sustained by the School of Mines by fire, as its importance to the district is recognised. It is thought the insurance may possibly cover the loss. The origin of the fire was purely accidental, no blame being attributed to anyone.
