SOCIAL AT TAMAHERE.
On Monday evening last a very pleasant tea and social was held in the Tamahere school-room in connection with St. Stephen's Church, at which most of the parishioners and their friends were present. Archdeacon Willis presided, and gave a reading, after which, on behalf of the congregation, he presented Misa Mary Main with a handsome gold brooch as a small token of their appreciation of her services as organist for the last five years. Mr Wheeller, chairman of the Tamahere School Committee, handed the children, who had successfully passed the standard examination, some well-selected books as prizes. These were kindly given by their teacher, Mr Edwards, assisted by some friends, who considered that in country districts it is a goosl idea to encourage those who live a distance from the school to be regular in their attendance. A Sundayschool prize for regular attendance was also given by Miss Barwell to Master Steele. The musical portion of the programme wae well and ably carried out by the following ladies and gentlemen : —Mrs L. B. Ewen, Misses Lowish, Barugh, Main and Maxwell, Messrs Barugh. Edwards, J. W. Smith, Pickering and Elston. After supper, which was partaken of at 10 o'clock, the room was cleared and dancing commenced, be:ng c ntii.m?d fill 2.80 a.m. The Tamahere congregation are to be congratulated upon having paid off the debt on their pretty little church, and when promised subscriptions are in their liabilities will be under £10. They evidently boar in mind the co-operative motto, " unity is strength."
