DEMONSTEATIONS PASSED
OFF QUIETLY. (BY KLKOTKIf 1 TKLICGRAPH.—COPYRIGHT.) London, May 2. The pjrade in Hyde Park was a fiasco. It was computed that not more than 1500, mainly Socialists, attended. Violent Hpeeclias were delivered there, and also at Clerkenwoll, Middlesex. Replying to a question, Mr W. If. Smith, leader of the House, said the Government were considering the best means to pive offeet to the resolutions carried at the Berlin Labour Conference. Pauls, May 3. The only approach to disorder here was a little scuffling, which took place between the military and the processionists. Several delegates presented a petition to the Chamber of Deputies with reference to the eight hours' movement, and M, the President, promised that the request of the deputation!] should receive every consideration at the hands of the Chamber. Louise Michel will be indicted fordeliveriupf a seditious speech. The majority of those arrested on sus- j picionof being connected with the Anarchists have been released. Forty thousand employees of the woollen factories in Roubaix are on strike. The Bourse has risen. May 4. The Marquis Mores, who was arrested on a charge of inciting the army to join the Anarchists, has been liberated. Forty of the persons recently arrested have been sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, Berlin, May 2. The holiday here was observed by 130,000 workmen. Marseilles,, May 2. During the labour demonstration yesterday the mob pillaged a factory and broke into many of the shops. The police were powerless to interfere. Vienna, May 2. Yesterday the Government conceded the employees a half-holiday, to enable them to take part in the labour celebrations, and private employers gave the whole day. Not a single arrest or case of disorderly conduct is reported. Seventy meetings were held in this city yesterday, at all of which resolutions were unanimously adopted favouring eight hours as the length of a day's work. Madrid, May 2. After the procession yesterday delegates from workmen presented a petition to the Cortes, praying that the length of a day's work should be fixed at eight hours.
Strikes are. spreading throughout Spain. Owing to riots at Barcelona, martial law has been proclaimed there. The eight-hour system is being conceded by numerous masters throughout Spain. During the labour celebration at Valencia military aid was invoiced to maintain order. Hajiuuiig, May 2. It will probably be enacted that nine thousand Government employees who were absent without leave on the Ist will be dismissed. Boda-Pesth, May 2. Yesterday a holiday was observed by workmen in this city, and there was some rioting. During the demonstration the military, who were in readiness in case of need, charged the crowd and dispersed them. Nkw York, May 2. The eight-hour agitation is spreading through the States.
