NEW PLYMOUTH MURDER CASE.
>Tkw Plymouth, Last Night. Mil Samuel, defending Mahikai, charged with the murder of Stephen Malouey, has written to the Crown prosecutor, urging that an efficient detective be procured t> supplement the efforts of the local police, in their endeavour to ascertain who committed the murder. Mahikai was brought up at the Police Court, and the Crown Prosecutor asked for a further remand. Mr Samuel agreed, but said it was on the understanding that the inquest should go on to its finish, he considered it unfair that the native should be kept in custady week after week without a scrap of evidence being produced against him. The prisoner was remanded till Monday, and the inquest was resumed. To-day John Clafey, caretaker of the racecourse, being recalled, said ho was not quite sure that Malonny's new boots had an iron plato on them. He first heard ot the murder about 3 o'clock on Saturday, April 12th. Ho afterwards saw the place where tho body was found —in a beaten track. Hβ heard nothing; nor was the fern broken down. It looked greatly as if somebody had walked through. He looked round for doceaseds hat and stick, but did nob see them. There was no sign of a struggle
