(BY TELEGBAPH—-PKES3 ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Last Night. The Early Closing Association have requested their delegates to the Trade and Labour Council to broach the subject of payment of wanes on other days than Saturday, and suggested Monday would be preferable. The Hon. J. Fergus left by the Penguin for the South this afternoon. He goes as far as Dunedin, but will be away only for a few days, as a meeting of the full Cabinet takes place early next week. The ship Opa'wa arrived from London today. In the Appeal Court this morning the case Regina v, Howard, in which James N. Howard was convicted in Auckland on December 10th of a charge of unlawfully wounding, was heard. At the trial it was discovered that H. Anderson, eeaman, a witness for the prosecution, had sailed for New York and Justice Gillies admitted his depositions as taken in the lower Court, reserving the question for the opinion of the Appeal Court whether the evidence had been properly admitted. The Court upheld the conviction.
