SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

CAMBRIDGE EAST. Thk annual meeting in connection with the Cambridge East school was held on Monday evening at 7'30 p.m., in t,he Public Hall ; Mr J. P. Thomson being voted to the chair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The following report nf the outgoing committee was then read :—The first duty the committee elected a year ago had to perform vvns to select, iv head-master in place of W. S. Stewart, who had resigned to fill another appointment. From the names of those submitted by the Board they selected that of Mr R. C. Dyer, and the committee take this opportunity of congratulating parents upon having obtained the services of a thoroughly able and painstaking teacher. Since he has taken over the headmastership tho work of the school has gone on quietly, the duties being efficiently performed. The committee regret having to report that during the past year there has been a further decrease in tho number of scholars on the school roll, the average weekly number being 2071, and the average attendance 1547. The quarter ending March 31, however, shows a slight improvement, the figures being 211-2, and IGV4 respectively. The committee having decided to put in force the compulsory clauses of the Education Act, the head-master has sent in a return of children who have not attended school the requisite number of times during the past quarter, and the list has been handed to the police authorities to take the , necessary proceedings against the parents. The committee take this opportunity of urging parents to see that their children are sent regularly and punctually to school. Good results cannot be expected if children are irregular, as even a day's absence is much more serious to a child's education than is apt to be supposed. Parents are also reminded that a larger average attendi ance means a larger and more efficient teaching staff, and also an increased grant to tho school funds. The annual examination for standards was held by Inspector Crowe in November, with the result that 73"8 per cent, nf the scholars presented passed. The c nnnrittee have pleasnro in reporting that ut the scholarsdip examination held in December, one of the children (Master Carnachan) attending this school was successful in obtaining a scholarship, entitling him to a grant for three years to enable him to pursue his studies at the Auckland Grammar School. This year the head-master hopes to send forward several scholars to this examination. Athletic sports in connection with the school were held in February and passed off successfully. A concert was got up in November which resulted in the sum of £7 Us Gd being placed to the credit of the school fund.—R. W. Sahgknt, chairman.—The balance-sheet was also submitted, and it and the report were adopted.—The following were elected a committee for the enßueing year, and the number of votes recorded in thoir favour :—Messrs J.
