THE PRIMACY.

Wellington, Last Night. Tne Synod resumed its sittings yesterday. The Bishop of Dunedin took exception to Bishop Suter being referred to in the minutes as President of the Synod, and pointed out that a more correct term according to Canon Title A, clause 28, would be Primate for the time being.

The minutes were altered accordingly.

The Bishop of Auckland brought up a motion, of which he had given notice, and the leave of the meeting was given him to alter the same by omitting the words, " pursuant to the provisions of canon for the appointment of a Primate." The ballot for the election of a Primate was then proceeded with, and on the suggestion of Bishop Suter it was docided that after it had been taken the details of the voting should be made known. In reply to a question Bishop Suter said he had not the slightest doubt of the legal correctness of such steps. The Hon. Mr Acland and Major Baillie were appointed scrutineers. Bishop Hadfield was elected on the first ballot. The voting for Bishop Hadfield was : — Three bishops, eleven clergy, and ten laymen For Bishop Suter it was : One Bishop, four clergy, and eight laymen. For Bishop Stuart: One layman. Bishop Hadfield did not vote. Having more than one-half of the votes recorded in each of three orders, he was declared duly elected Primate of New Zealand amidst loud applause.
