(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION'.) Wellington, Last Night. It is understood that the vacancy in the Government Insurance Department has been confered on Mr Richardson, secietary and accountant in the Department.
One of the New Zealand Government cables across Gook Straits is giving a good deal of trouble, and on the arrival of the Cable Company's steamer in New Zealand the cable will be under-run for repairs.
The Government have had several valuations made of the East Coast Company'sland at Gisboine and will shortly make the owners an offer for a lot. Mr Norgrove, a local resident here, had an interview with the Premier this morning bringing under notice a torpedo which he has invented and which he claims is equal, if not superior, to the Brennan torpedo. Sir E. Whitaker and Hon. E. A. Stevens will arrive here about Ist May when a full meeting of the Cabinet will decide the date for calling Parliament together. He considers the date will be either from 12th or 19th.
